Our Lady of the Lake University Smart Classrooms

 A “Smart Classroom” is a user-friendly electronically-enhanced teaching  environment n

All of the newer OLLU smart classrooms have been designed first to simplify and streamline presentation. A simple-to-use control interface is key, and this interface is common in all of the recently upgraded classrooms. Familiarity with the control mechanisms of presentation media from one classroom to the next allows for seamless movement from one room to another.

From a student's perspective, smart classrooms should provide at the very least the best presentation tehnology experience possible.

OLLU smart classrooms take this a step further. Classroom technology must now accommodate a "new generation of students". Classrooms must provide for more than just high-quality presentaion capabilities. Today's classroom must provide an interactive and collaborative environment.

To meet these changing demands and improve the learning process, OLLU smart classroom technology includes the following capabilities:

  • High quality presentation projection systems
  • Simplified and common user control interface
  • A choice of presentation media (PC, Internet, VCR, DVD, transparency slides, document camera, audio reinforcement)
  • Network connectivity to the instructor's podium
  • Wireless LAN access for students in all classrooms (for PDAs, laptops, etc)
  • An ability to convert a normal calssroom into a wireless computer lab if needed (see Media Services)
  • Classroom Response Systems
  • Content capture capabilities

OLLU has 24 “technology-enhanced” classrooms. n13 of these were deployed in the last year.

Smart Classroom Support

USIT provides continuous maintenance and support for all the smart classroom technologies across campus. This includes the AMX programming and room control hardware and software maintenance needed to keep these classrooms operating. USIT also provides operator-level training for faculty and staff as needed for smart classroom technologies.
